Gift Ideas from Indie Beauty Founders We Got to Know

We can't believe it either! Christmas and Chanukah are only 5 days away and while we want to be merry, jolly and enjoy these precious family moments, it can also be super stressful if you still can't decide on those perfect gifts! To make those last minute shopping excursions a little bit easier, here's a quick compilation of products and gift-able items that we loved from indie conscious brands whose founders we were lucky enough to get to know throughout this year!

by Mahalo Skin Care (1.7 fl oz, $90)

We know what you're thinking - isn't giving a moisturizer so generic? Not this balm! This luxuriously rich, yet  balm-moisturizer is going to be your salvation for every part of your body during these cold winter months. Formulated without water, the balm melts on touch to a golden fluid to protect, soothe and moisturize. Not to mention, the ingredient list is clean, packed with good-for-skin natural emollients and smells divine. It also helps to know that it's made in Hawaii, if you don't have any tropical weather plans this winter!

by Pour Le Monde (1.7 fl oz, $82)

Meryl's favorite fragrance from the exquisitely and purely formulated natural perfumes company Pour le Monde. TOGETHER is elegant and graceful, a classic woodsy floral that's flirtatious yet delicate.  Top notes include delicious citruses like Argentina Lemon and Italian Bergamot, which opens up to the classic floral favorites since ancient times like Jasmine, Violets, Lilac and Freesia.  And finally, settles down into a creamy blend of woodsy scents with a dash of patchouli and balsam. Best yet, 10% of the net sale of TOGETHER benefits the Cancer Support Community! Our VP of marketing is addicted to the ENVISION one which is described as "Smooth, Seductive, Daring and Exotic..." which one will you choose?

by Laguna Candles (35.5 oz, $180)

These beautiful one-of-a-kind artisan candles are filled with their eco-friendly, proprietary blend of clean burning soy-based wax and smells divine.  Their signature scent featuring notes of citrus, lime and verbena seems more rich yet fresh like the coasts of Laguna.  Each piece is hand blown and hand poured and some are infused with silver.  All create mesmerizing organic patterns as the light flickers on for a whopping 140 hours.

We know our posting is a little last minute but we hope that it can come in handy for birthday presents and future gifting in the future, too!

Thank you for all your support and love throughout 2016 xox

How she made it! Special Interview with Top Eco Influencer Kristen Arnett (Part I)

A longtime creative force and a hardworking visionary of the beauty industry, Kristen Arnett has taken on a multitude of roles ranging from international makeup artist to brand consultant to being a "Green Leader" and "Top Eco Influencer" as ELLE and Eileen Fisher respectively put it.

Her newest project was the launch of the Best of Beauty Awards by the Green Beauty Team, an online healthy beauty resource that she launched to educate women of the potential dangers that may be lurking in their makeup bag, and to help them make safer, cleaner choices.

Smart, warm and down-to-earth, Kristen is constantly traveling the world, hosting workshops, speaking at events, writing for leading publications, and appearing on TV shows to spread her message of self-care and wellness through the pathway of sustainable beauty.

As we've had the pleasure to collaborate and get to know Kristen during the past years, we've decided to bring you this interview where she shares her beauty journey, the challenges she faces in her work as one of the few green and sustainable makeup artists in the world, and her plans for the future!  Here is part 1 of a 2 part series.

1. Where does your love for makeup artistry come from and how did you get started in the industry?

Since I was a little girl, I loved makeup. I recorded every makeover TV show I could. I would cut out just the heads from models in magazines when I liked their makeup and tape them to the wall of my bedroom. Of course, my mom was worried about this collection of just faces I had, but once she understood the fascination was about the art, she saw how my love for makeup could turn into a profession and wholeheartedly supported my journey.

I love makeup because of its power to transform a face and how women feel about themselves. When I watched all these makeovers, it was the reactions the women and their loved ones had when they saw their “new self” that most inspired me… These makeovers didn't change who these women were, but they changed the way the world viewed them and the way they felt about themselves.

2. What was the decisive moment when you decided to dedicate yourself to green makeup artistry and sustainable beauty?

I had been struggling with acne for most of my life and trying everything, from chemicals peels to prescriptions drugs, but nothing seemed to work for me. Then, one day, when I was living and working in Milan, I met this model who suggested I tried going organic with my skincare and only use natural products. She explained to me that the majority of traditional beauty products have toxic and potentially carcinogenic ingredients, such as parabens and artificial fragrances, that could irritate your skin and damage your health.

This was something that I had never considered before, yet it was all starting to make sense. This model was using only natural products and her skin looked amazing. Working backstage at Fashion Week, where models have their makeup done five or six times a week, I saw how their skin became sensitized to makeup to the point they couldn't tolerate it anymore. I started to wonder whether all these ingredients and all the acne treatments I had previously tried were doing me more harm than good.

So, I switched my traditional products for natural alternatives and saw a difference fairly quickly. My skin was less inflamed and was glowing. I started doing more research into the subject and soon became convinced that a lot of the traditional ingredients used in cosmetics are harming both our health and our environment. The next step was to start using the new natural products I had discovered for my clients and start educating them, too.

Above is a look at some of Kristen's super helpful and fun videos, blog posts and even recipes for a beautiful, healthy life which can be found on

3. What challenges did you face when you decided to greenify your professional makeup kit?

At the beginning, we're talking about more than 6 years ago, it was very challenging. At the time, it was almost impossible to find good quality natural makeup that provided the finishes and textures I needed to achieve the effects I wanted.

When I went to shoots, I always brought two makeup kits with me, one full of natural products and one full of traditional products. If the makeup look for the job wasn't that important, I would try to use the natural products first, but very often, I had to wash them off and start again with traditional products. There were some effects that it just wasn't possible to achieve with natural cosmetics at the time.

Thankfully, things have changed dramatically since then. There are now companies like Hynt that are creating luxurious makeup products that deliver the same, if not better, results than traditional cosmetics.

4. What's your life goal with your work?

My goal is to expand my worth through Green Beauty Team, spreading the message of wellness and self-care through the pathway of beauty as far as possible, connecting with millions of people globally. I see my website as a safe place online where anyone can be inspired, educate themselves about what's in their cosmetics and make the best choices to feel and be beautiful and healthy.

You Must Have Soft, Smooth Lips to Wear Bold Lip Colors

It’s time to bring out those bold red lip colors that will add the perfect touch of color and warmth to your paler complexion during those colder months. Don’t be afraid to switch up your safe pinky nude lip for something more daring, the weather is calling for it! Nothing screams confidence more than a bold colored lip choice and all it takes is your attitude and smooth, polished lips….

Nothing’s really much worse than wearing a statement color on flakey, dry lips! So here’s an easy & budget conscious DIY kitchen trick to avoid and treat those chapped lips.

Homemade Lip Sugar Scrub

What you’ll need:

  • Damp washcloth
  • Warm water
  • Small bowl or cup
  • Brown sugar
  • Organic Honey
  • Rich, Non-Petroleum Lip Balm

  • Press a damp, warm washcloth onto your lips for about 30 seconds to soften up the dead skin.
  • Mix 1 ½ tsp of brown sugar and 1 tsp of honey (this can be re-used for a few days if kept sealed and covered)
  • Using your finger, take a bit of the mixture, purse your lips, and scrub in circular motions to get the dead skin off
  • Take your damp washcloth and begin rubbing in circular motions over the scrub that was previously applied
  • Wipe off the mixture with your wash cloth
  • Apply a rich, soothing organic lip balm without petroleum or menthol or any other no-no ingredients that may cause your lips to become sensitive, irritated or even more dry!

The Perfect (Smooth & Soft) Bold Lip

Now that your lips are smooth and soft, it’s time to break out those gorgeous red shades!
  • Each of our ARIA Lipstick comes with a hidden lip conditioner + primer right on top of the cap! Apply a bit of the balm with your finger
  • Find a color lip liner that is close to the color of your lipstick...or slightly darker to accentuate your pout and make it look more full.
  • Closely & precisely line the lips just slightly outside of your natural lip line.

TIP! To ensure clean lines and to prevent your arm or hand shaking, plant your elbow on a table or flat surface.
  • If you want extra oomph, apply a dab of gloss on top to take lips center stage

I hope that this post comes in handy when you’re in need of combatting the icky side effects of blistery cold weather!
Using simple and natural ingredients like these are great for fixing beauty issues organically (albeit not vegan…) while still being health AND budget conscious!

Happy Fall! Xox

Makeup & Skincare Tips from Meryl when going through Cancer Treatment

Cancer is a devastating disease that affects every part of your life; it interferes with your job, tests your relationships and takes a huge toll on your body. One of the hardest parts of this experience is getting used to the new and unrecognizable person you see in the mirror every day. Especially as you are going through harsher forms of treatment. The skin may be super sensitive, parched, flaky, covered in spots. Your luscious hair, arched brows and long eyelashes may have fallen off. On the good days, you might actually feel quite good, but sometimes, the way you look doesn’t keep up.

While we are not doctors ourselves and every story is unique with their own set of concerns and needs, our founder Meryl Marshall do know first-hand the traumatic impact that these external changes can have on a woman's self-esteem. She experienced them herself after being diagnosed with breast cancer. A fighter and a beauty lover through and through, one of Meryl’s battles was coming up with a makeup and skincare routine that helped her look and moreover, feel beautiful as often as she could when she faced the mirror.

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Meryl shares with us how cancer has prompted her to give her beauty routine a green makeover, a challenge that would later inspire and motivate her to create Hynt Beauty, and the tricks she learned to pamper herself so she could look and, in turn feel, her best while fighting cancer.

1. Switch to organic and fragrance-free moisturizers

Treatment often slows down the skin's ability to renew itself and reduces the production of sebum, the skin's own natural moisturizer. As a result, your skin becomes dry and parched and, in the worst cases, can flake and itch.

Keeping your skin as hydrated as possible during this time is essential. Unfortunately, too many moisturizers on the market contain undesirable ingredients that can at worst, interfere with your treatments and worsen your skin’s condition.

Meryl opted for organic formulas that nourish and pamper the skin and made sure they are fragrance-free, too. Your sense of smell becomes very acute during treatment and even the subtlest scent can make you feel nauseous. Meryl's go-to brand that fits all these requirements is Acure, especially their Ultra Hydrating Body Lotion, Bare Baby Lotion, Moroccan Argan Oil and Sensitive Facial Cream!

2. Deep condition your hands and feet

Your face isn't the only part of your body that needs an extra dose of tender loving care during this difficult time. Up your moisturizing game by giving your hands and feet a pampering deep conditioning treatment before you go to sleep. Slather on rich and moisturizing oil-based natural balms and then put on a pair of cotton gloves or socks. In the morning, your extremities will be much softer and smoother.

3. Wear physical sunscreen every day

Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is always a good idea, but it becomes of paramount importance during cancer treatment when your skin is extremely vulnerable and sensitive. Ideally, you should avoid the sun as much as possible but that's not always feasible.

To give your skin the extra protection it needs, use a physical sunscreen with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. Unlike their chemical counterparts that are easily absorbed by the skin, these natural minerals remain safely on its surface where they create a protective shield that reflects UV rays away from it.

4. Neutralize facial redness

Steroids are often prescribed as part of treatments to help reduce inflammation. Unfortunately, they have several side effects, including flushing, redness and rashes. If your skin is affected by steroid redness, the best course of action is to mask it with makeup.

A yellow-toned powder, such as our FINALE Finished Powder in Neutral Yellow can neutralize the redness, rendering it near invisible to the naked eye. It is also formulated with organic arrowroot, which serves as a natural remedy to deeply hydrate and soothe irritated, tired skin. For best results, apply it with a brush with synthetic bristles. Animal hair brushes tend to be coarse and, therefore, more irritating.

Also, skin discoloration is common during treatment so apply and blend our hydrating, luxuriously creamy and full coverage DUET Perfecting Concealer over the affected areas.  Most times, these discolorations fade with time.

5. Smell good with natural deodorants

Some cancer treatments can force a woman into early menopause, which can result in frequent perspiration during hot flushes. If this is happening to you, it may be very tempting to use heavy-duty antiperspirants containing aluminium.

What you may not be aware of is that antiperspirants cause more problems than they solve. To start with, they act like a plug, sealing shut the entrance to your sweat ducts, thereby stopping the flow of sweat. As desirable as this may appear during a hot flush, this is far from healthy.

In addition, aluminum can easily be absorbed by the skin and has been linked to breast cancer. A safer alternative is a natural deodorant that contains baking soda and/or kaolin clay. However, due to the skin's heightened sensitivity at this time, some patients report a mild irritation even to these gentler ingredients. A better option that Meryl used and wholeheartedly recommends is natural corn starch powder like Honest Company's Organic Baby Powder.

6. A polished manicure

Many cancer patients experience nail deterioration and even loss, so traditional manicures and nail polishes are strictly forbidden at this time. To help your nails stay in the best possible condition, keep your nail care routine simple and basic. Keep your hands clean, trim your nails and make them shine with a soft nail buffer. Finally, work in a bit of olive or jojoba oil to stave off brittle nails.

7. Go green with your lipstick

A creamy lipstick or shiny gloss is always a great mood-lifter. But, once again, it is important to pay careful attention to the labels and what they contain. Opt for unscented and organic formulas that are free of harsh and potentially toxic chemicals. Lip products can be easily ingested so why risk even the slightest chance of causing more havoc on your health now or in the future, when there are purer, equally beautiful colors and great natural brands to choose from!

Meryl and the rest of the Hynt Beauty team sincerely hope that these little bits of advice will somehow give you or your loved one, some relief from the side effects but moreover, give the confidence boost to fight against cancer – in style! If you have any additional tips, please do send us an email, comment on our social platforms or comment on this blog post! We are sure others will find it helpful as well.
